In a timely example of why it's so imporant for us to get more Democrats elected to Congress, Senate Republicans succeeded yesterday in killing a bill that would have removed limits on how long workers can wait before filing lawsuits against their employers for pay discrimination. Both remaining contenders for the Democratic nomination were on hand to speak out in favor of the bill and cast their votes for it, but John McCain, who has already secured his party's presidential nomination, was still too busy pandering for votes on the campaign trail to be bothered to show up.
This bill is a perfect example of the kind of legislation that we'll be able to pass with a bigger majority in Congress and a Democrat in the White House. Three more votes would have given us a cloture-proof majority for the bill and allowed it to be passed. One of those votes is running for Senate here in Texas. But the longer we have to fight the presidential nomination out, the less money and time we have to commit to Democrats like Rick Noriega in down-ballot races.
