I haven't blogged about this yet, but I think most people have heard about Mark Penn getting sort-of-demoted by the Clinton campaign for doing footwork in favor of a free trade agreement with Colombia while his candidate, Hillary Clinton, was telling people she opposed the same free trade agreement. Well, it turns out that her husband Bill has also spoken out publicly in favor of the same Colombian free trade pact:
A reader in Latin America turned up a June 23, 2005 article from the news portal Terra that quotes Bill Clinton offering unambiguous support for the free trade agreement with Colombia.
The article is in Spanish, so what follows is a translation of a translation, but the gist is unmistakable:
"We need your help to expedite the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the EU [Spanish abbreviation for United States] is very important to give a clear signal of what the relations between the two countries should be," President Alvaro Uribe said yesterday to the former president of the EU Bill Clinton, during Expogestion 2005.
"I will raise your point when you return to the United States," Clinton replied. "I am in favor of the free trade agreement and it is my hope that we will find the right formula to reach the agreement."
And to make things even better, Hillary's call for Bush to boycott the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games comes several months after Bill Clinton allegedly encouraged Steven Speilberg not to go ahead with his plans to personally boycott the games. Is this two-headed Clinton monster really what we want governing the country?
