McBlogger on TRC Chairman Michael Williams:
Texas Railroad Commission Chair Michael Williams isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, nor is he the dullest. In fact, he's not a knife at all. He's a rusty bottle opener in a world full of twist offs and every bit as worthless.
McBlogger is talking about this post over at bowtie-wearing jackass Michael Williams' blog, where he attempts to defend Exxon and his other friends in Big Oil by making the incredible assertion that all of the money from the increase in gasoline prices is going to Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Russia, and that Big Oil's profits are flat over the last several years. In fact, as refinish69 points out, Exxon posted fourth-quarter profits in February of this year that were up a whopping 14%, showing a quarterly profit of over $11 billion and an annual profit of over $40 billion - both all-time records for a US corporation.
The Texas Railroad Commission chairmanship is one of those state-level offices that has a level of importance to our daily lives grossly disproportionate to the miniscule level of attention it receives. You see its importance every time you buy gasoline, and the people in Daisetta are getting an object lesson in its importance as the stadium-sized sinkhole in their own backyards continues to grow. Mark Thompson is the Democratic nominee running against Williams this November, and he's our best hope for instituting some much needed reform in the Texas Railroad Commission and its oversight of the oil and gas industry.
